Rogue One Is a Critical Step for Star Wars

Last week, the Internet (and Good Morning America?) got its first look at Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the new Star Wars spinoff film coming December 2016. This film will mark the first time we'll be getting a major, live-action Star Wars movie that isn't a main-line, numbered episode, and that's a pretty big deal for a number of reasons. Write here...

Jurassic World: Review

Jurassic World was never going to top Jurassic Park; no sequel to the classic 1993 film can live up to the magic of seeing those dinosaurs for the first time. I knew this going in, and I think that helped avoid some unnecessary disappointment. But it's hard not to think about Jurassic Park sequels without a certain hesitation, as the second and third films both had various issues that kept them from reaching the greatness of the original.

The good news, though, is that this film holds its ground much more firmly than The Lost World or Jurassic Park III.

Is Jurassic World Doomed to be a Subpar Sequel?

Polygon's Ben Kuchera wrote an opinion piece last week titled, "Why Jurassic Park is one of the best action films ever (and how the sequel seems to flub it)." You can read it here. Kuchera provides a really interesting summation of why the original Jurassic Park works so well, but I think he may be missing the obvious in assessing what we know about Jurassic World. He argues that the sequel is so far off of the original that there's essentially little-to-no hope that it will regain any of the franchise's former glory. I'd argue that it might be much closer to the mark than he gives it credit.

Jurassic World Trailer: Initial Reaction

An adventure 65 million and 22 years in the making, Universal Studios unveiled the official trailer for 2015's Jurassic World, a four-quel that comes over two decades after the original 1993 film. As a major fan of the series (despite its stumbles), I had to share a few thoughts. And, of course, the trailer is embedded.

May the 4th Be With You!

With the unofficial Star Wars holiday upon us, I wanted to spend a little time shifting away from video games and onto film for the day. A mere five days ago, director J.J. Abrams and the rest of his team announced, to much internet reaction, the principle cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. How much can we really tell from a cast list? Very little, to be honest. But in the spirit of May the 4th, I'll share my initial reactions to each of the new cast members.
